History of Evans Lake

1946: The army barracks at Point Atkinson was turned over to the Canadian Forestry Association of British Columbia for summer training programs for the Junior Forest Wardens

1959: Point Atkinson was becoming too crowded and the Provincial Government agreed to lease the 604 acre Evans Lake Site. It was to be known as the Evans Lake Junior Forest Warden Camp and Demonstration Forest.

1960: The Dining Hall, Washroom, two Cabins and a Diesel House(current Tool Shed) were built. A total of 183 Junior Forest Wardens attended 3 camps.

1964: The Cabins were moved from the nursery area to the upper grounds and cabins 5 and 6 were built. The Recreation Hall was also completed. A huge forest fire burned from Hut Lakes to within 3/4 of a kilometer of camp.

1978: 1st permanent residence built

1980: Most of the trails and bridges were built or rebuilt. 100 hectares of juvenile forest was spaced and released.

1982: 8 Canoes and 8 Sailboats donated by the Vancouver Hoo Hoo Society

1983: 2nd permanent residence built.

1986: Cabins lifted and turned 90 degrees and put in current locations

1987: Cabin 7 and 8 were built

1994: New washrooms constructed between washrooms and old washhouse building was converted for storage, bedroom and office space.

1997: The new Evans Lake Forest Education Society was formed separate from the BC Forestry Association

2000: New septic system put in the upper half of the rehab site.

2001: Renovations to the Rec Hall chimney, porches, and new washrooms

2003: Additional canoes purchased - New Archery Range built

2004: Work Weekend - Projects included : Finishing the new archery range, Upgrading the Wilderness site, Upgrading the boat dock with rails and seating, and lots of painting.

2004: New Outdoor Adventure Camp (OAK) program launched and Cabin 9 temporarily located by the Rec Hall
